Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about the archive, the Foundation, and the record.
What the archive covers, how the historical record is built, how evidence is handled, and how the nonprofit structure fits behind the project.
What is Kansas Ultrarunning History?
KansasUltrarunningHistory.org is the primary historical archive and public website of the Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation. It preserves, verifies, and shares the history of ultrarunning in Kansas, including races, runners, clubs and organizations, race directors, volunteers, results, photographs, original documents, firsthand accounts, and other material that helps explain how the sport developed in the state.
What is the Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation?
The Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation is a Kansas not-for-profit corporation founded August 24, 2026, by Wichita native and longtime ultrarunner Eric Steele. The Foundation provides the institutional home for KansasUltrarunningHistory.org, KansasUltraRaces.com, and KansasUltrarunners.com and supports historical preservation, research, documentation, digitization, publication, and public education.
Is the Foundation already recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity?
Not yet. The Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation has obtained its EIN and submitted IRS Form 1023-EZ. Recognition as a 501(c)(3) public charity is currently pending with the Internal Revenue Service.
Why was the archive created?
Decades of Kansas ultrarunning history are scattered across magazines, newspapers, newsletters, race records, personal collections, old websites, photographs, and individual memories. The archive was created to bring those sources together, preserve material that could otherwise disappear, and make the historical record easier to research and understand.
Who founded the Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation?
The Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation was founded on August 24, 2026, by Wichita native and longtime ultrarunner Eric Steele. KansasUltrarunningHistory.org serves as the Foundation’s primary historical archive and public website.
Is Kansas Ultrarunning History the official website of a club, race, or governing body?
No. KansasUltrarunningHistory.org is the primary historical archive of the Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation. It may document clubs, races, race organizations, and governing bodies that have been part of Kansas ultrarunning history, but it is not their official website and does not speak on their behalf.
What does the archive consider ultrarunning?
For the purposes of this project, ultrarunning generally refers to footraces, timed events, and endurance efforts that extend beyond the standard marathon distance. Historical context matters, so unusual formats and events may also be documented when they are relevant to the development of ultrarunning in Kansas.
What kinds of sources are used?
Sources may include original race results, race applications and programs, club records and newsletters, contemporary magazine and newspaper coverage, photographs, certificates, correspondence, archived websites, interviews, and firsthand accounts. Whenever possible, important historical claims are checked against more than one independent source.
How are conflicting historical accounts handled?
Conflicting accounts are not automatically erased or forced into a single version. When credible sources disagree, the archive will identify the disagreement, explain the available evidence, and distinguish confirmed facts from recollection, interpretation, or unresolved questions.
Does the archive cover only race winners and elite performances?
No. Results and notable performances are part of the record, but Kansas ultrarunning history was built by far more than race winners. The archive also recognizes race directors, volunteers, crews, clubs, organizers, photographers, writers, families, communities, and other people whose contributions helped the sport exist and grow.
Will current races and runners be included, or only older history?
Both. The project preserves the past while also documenting the present so that today's races, people, results, and milestones do not become tomorrow's missing history.
Is the archive complete?
No, and it will never be completely finished. Historical research is iterative. New results, photographs, documents, and firsthand accounts continue to surface, and existing entries may be expanded or corrected as stronger evidence becomes available.
Can people submit corrections, documents, photographs, or historical information?
Yes. Community knowledge and privately held material can be essential to reconstructing the historical record. A formal contribution and correction process will be added as the archive expands. Submitted information will still be evaluated against the available evidence before historical claims are changed.
Will every submitted claim be published as fact?
No. A submission can be valuable without being independently verifiable. The archive will distinguish between documented fact, credible firsthand testimony, unresolved claims, and interpretation whenever that distinction matters.
What are Kansas Ultra Races and Kansas Ultrarunners?
KansasUltraRaces.com and KansasUltrarunners.com are historical resources of the Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation. Kansas Ultra Races is race-focused, Kansas Ultrarunners is people-focused, and KansasUltrarunningHistory.org serves as the Foundation’s primary historical archive. Together, the three properties document the broader Kansas ultrarunning record.
What is the relationship between Kansas Ultrarunning History and Epic Ultras?
KansasUltrarunningHistory.org and the Foundation’s related historical resources are powered and supported by Epic Ultras. Their historical scope covers Kansas ultrarunning broadly and is not limited to Epic Ultras events, participants, or history.
How should researchers, journalists, or other websites cite this archive?
When using information from Kansas Ultrarunning History, link to the specific archive page that supports the claim rather than only linking to the homepage. When an archive page identifies an original underlying source, researchers are encouraged to consult and cite that original source as well.
Why does the site use the word “ultrarunning” as one word?
That is the site's editorial convention. Throughout Kansas Ultrarunning History, “ultrarunning” is treated as one word for consistency across pages, metadata, historical entries, and machine-readable files.
